Dutch-, Danish- and German Open 23.10.-10.11.02

Two months after my illness, I wrote about it, I took part in three tournaments in a row. The most important thing for me was to get some matches  and to find the same level I had before. As well in doubles with my new partner Juliane Schenk, the tournaments are important for us to find together on court and also get some points for the world ranking.

The first tournament the Dutch Open took place in Eindhoven, where we reached the Thomas-/Uber Cup Final last February. In singles I had an easy first round against an Austrian player but in the round of the last 16 I lost without any chance against the No 1 from England. The reason for loosing was not only the absent match praxis it was also the time delay during the tournament. I should have to play at 7:40 pm, but I went on court about 0.45 am. I was not able to concentrate at this time, but my opponent played very well.

In doubles I played with Carina Mette because both of our partners were at the army at this time. We had not really a good draw… In the first round we played directly against the later winners of Denmark. We played well but we couldn’t win a set after leading high.

In the week after I played the Danish Open in Farum, the second largest tournament in Europe. In singles I met in the first round the World Junior Champion from China. After winning the first set, it was the first time that a German player won a set against a Chinese national player I got tired in the middle of the second set. I played on a really high level but after my break for two months I couldn’t hold this level until the end. I lost in three sets and the tournament was finished for me in singles.

In doubles, this time I played with my partner Juliane, we met the No 3 seeded pair from Sweden. We played not that good but we were leading in the third set 10:6 and we had about five match points. I don’t know why, but we lost this match 13:12 and we were really disappointed after the match. It was our first common tournament and we could see that we need a lot of matches to find together on court.

The last tournament was the German Open in Duisburg. All German players hope to have a good draw, because it is the only tournament in Germany where the television shows some matches. Nobody here in Germany is interesting in Badminton if there’s no German player on TV. My draw was not good… After winning the first round easily against a Canadian player I met the European Champion from Holland in the round of the last 16. There was no chance for me to reach the quarter final. Of course, I tried to irritate her but she was better in finishing the long rallies. For me it was important to have another match on this level.

In doubles we played against a Danish pair, but we only had a chance to win in the first set. We lost in the first round again, but we have to accept it because we both need some matches to get a better feeling on court. I was ill and Juliane couldn’t practice because of the army. First of all we have to find together on court and we know that it takes time.

Well, after the three tournaments I can say that I felt better and better on court and I think I nearly reached the level I had before my illness.

I will write about the Scottish Open in Glasgow, which will be the next tournament for me.

See you
